Michelin selects the best moderately priced restaurants, for an affordable yet
memorable meal.

Michelin has added a new set of addresses to its list of affordable restaurants with
the just-published “Bib Gourmand Benelux” guide, proving that a good meal
doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Although people undoubtedly think twice in today’s
economy, they are still on the lookout for good restaurants. And there are certainly
plenty of them in Benelux, as the “Bib Gourmand” guide attests. In it, the smiling
Michelin Man licking his lips = indicates restaurants that offer a tasty three-course
meal (appetizer, main dish and dessert) for less than €35 (or €36 in Brussels,
Luxembourg and Amsterdam).
From bistros to trendy eateries and from traditional to exotic cuisine, the “Bib
Gourmand” guide hunts down restaurants that offer quality dishes at an affordable
price so that diners can satisfy their appetites without emptying their pocketbooks.
The broad selection allows readers to pick and choose depending on their tastes,
mood, dining companions or the season.
Nearly a quarter of the addresses in the 2012 guide are new, reflecting the
constantly changing gastronomic landscape. In all, 39 new restaurants have been
added and 25 removed, in keeping with the guide’s uncompromising focus on quality
for the money.

New finds in 2012
In Belgium, a major address in Antwerp has been added with “Cuichine”, a
mouthwatering Chinese restaurant run by the two sons of a Chinese cook. The
brothers have put their childhood favorites on the menu, carefully combining ultra-fresh ingredients in basic yet interesting dishes. Their restaurant is sure to make
Chinese food a staple in Antwerp and beyond.
“Sjo d’O”, a typical neighborhood eatery in Kraainem, near Brussels, is another new
entry this year. The traditional, quality menu and friendly service make guests feel
right at home. “La Cloche”, a charming “Bib Gourmand” address in the Walloon
region, also offers a warm welcome and simple, flavorful dishes.

In the Netherlands, diners can pick from a large number of restaurants that mix
quality ingredients and authentic tastes. One example is “Ron’s Vis van de Dag”
from Michelin star chef Ron Blaauw, which offers family-style cuisine with a focus on
fish. The eatery keeps things fresh and simple, so the ingredients can express
themselves fully.
Even in the country’s major tourist attractions, Michelin’s inspectors managed to sniff
out good menus at affordable prices. Among them are “De Campveerse Toren in
Veere”, which offers generous helpings of regional products, and “Hoofdstad” in
Amsterdam, the chic brasserie in the Hotel de “l’Europe” that serves up tasty dishes
in a marvelous atmosphere.

In Luxembourg, the selection confirms consistent quality. This is particularly true
with “Parmentier” in Junglinster, which continues to be sought after for its exotic
accents and friendly service.

Michelin’s philosophy
Although gastronomy evolves with time and fashion, the same criteria can always be
used to rate a good restaurant: quality ingredients, creativity and consistent
presentation. These are the criteria Michelin’s anonymous inspectors have applied
for more than 100 years to select the best establishments in all comfort and price
categories, always paying for their meals to ensure a rigorous selection.

The “Bib Gourmand Benelux 2012” lists 242 restaurants, 39 of them new:
– 133 in Belgium (22 new).
– 7 in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
– 102 in the Netherlands (17 new).
The guide will be available on November 9 for €15.95 in Belgium and the
Netherlands and €15.50 in Luxembourg.

2012 MICHELIN guides for Benelux
The two MICHELIN guides covering all restaurants and hotels in Benelux in all
categories of price and comfort will be released in the next few weeks, featuring new
starred restaurants:
– November 21, 2011 – MICHELIN Guide Belgium & Luxembourg 2012 (on sale from
November 24).
– November 28, 2011 – MICHELIN Guide Netherlands 2012 (on sale from December
1).

Thanks to a uniform, rigorous selection system applied worldwide, the MICHELIN Guide is an
international benchmark for gourmet dining. Today, the MICHELIN Guide collection comprises 27
guides covering 23 countries on three continents, with more than 45,000 addresses worldwide. The selection is prepared by anonymous inspectors, who are experienced hospitality industry
professionals. Employees of Michelin, the inspectors pay their hotel and restaurant bills in full.
